Medical emergency response
A responder's steps when someone collapses or is badly hurt.
Safety (1)
- Scene safe for you and the casualty
Check (2)
- Shout and tap: do they respond?
- Open the airway, check breathing for no more than 10 seconds
Call (3)
- Emergency number called, location given
- Someone sent for the AED
- Someone sent to meet the ambulance at the door
Act (3)
- Not breathing: chest compressions, 100 to 120 a minute, 5 cm deep
- AED on as soon as it arrives, follow its voice
- Breathing: recovery position, keep checking
Hand-over (2)
- Tell the paramedics what happened and when
- Write down times and what was done
