Find where it went (6)

  • Open the last 3 months of bank and card statements
  • Mark the day your balance first went under 10% of your pay, each month
  • Total food delivery, eating out and small daily spends
  • List every subscription and auto-pay, and cancel what you did not use last month
  • Add up instalments, pay-later plans and credit card minimumsThese are usually what grows month by month.
  • Look for one-offs that come every year: insurance, school fees, gifts

On payday, in this order (5)

  • Pay rent, loan and bill due dates first, or move them to the day after payday
  • Move savings out on the same day, even a small amount
  • Hold back an amount each month for yearly bills
  • Move the rest to a spending account or a card you can see
  • Work out your daily limit: what is left divided by days until next pay

Set a simple target (4)

  • Compare with 50/30/20: needs 50%, wants 30%, saving and debt 20%A guide, not a rule. High rent cities often need another split.
  • Pick one spending category to cut this month, not all of them
  • Turn on low balance alerts in your bank app
  • Delete saved cards from the shopping and food apps you overuse

Mid-month check (3)

  • Day 15: is your balance above half of your spending money?
  • If not, reduce the daily limit now instead of on day 28
  • Avoid payday loans and overdrafts for small gaps: ask for a due date change first

If it still does not add up (3)

  • Income is less than essentials: list what you can change, such as rent, loan terms and benefits
  • Talk to the lender before you miss a payment
  • Talk to a free debt adviserUK: StepChange. US: a nonprofit credit counsellor (NFCC).
